You’ll find Thailand has much to offer NZ travellers from historic culture, exotic beaches, lively arts, modern nightlife, and delicious cuisine to the tradition of friendliness and hospitality to visitors. Bordering Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, Thailand has managed to maintain its cultural identity and can boast being the only country in South East Asia that has never been colonised.

A Thailand travel highlight would definitely be Chiang Mai, the capital of the north, regarded as the cultural heart of Thailand. Once a quaint, moated and walled city, Chiang Mai has become a modern cosmopolitan hub exhibiting many of the hallmarks of the contemporary world.

The city boasts more than 300 temples – almost as many as Bangkok – a fact which makes it particularly striking. Climb the summit of Doi Suthep, with its glittering gold temple Wat Phra Thai Doi Suthep, which offers sweeping views over the city and plains below. Explore the temples and markets before heading into the mountains to trek to hilltribe villages, ride elephants through the jungle, and float down river on bamboo rafts.

Chiang Mai is the gateway to Chiang Rai, located in Thailand’s most northerly province. Chiang Rai makes a convenient base for exploring further into the ‘Golden Triangle’, an area that has for years produced almost half of the world’s opium supply, located near the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar (Burma). Sukhothai and Ayuthaya are also worth a visit; both are former capitals of the Kingdom and home to Buddhist monuments older than Angkor.

Thailand Travel: The River Kwai

The River Kwai region is another fascinating place to for NZ travellers to explore – visit the Bridge over the River Kwai and the JEATH (Japan, England, Australia, Thailand and Holland) War Memorials from the days of Japanese occupation during World War II.

Relax in Kanchanaburi, one of the country’s more temperate areas, resplendent with natural beauty. And one can’t forget the beaches and national parks for which the country is famous – kayaking in Khao Yai or sunbathing on Koh Samui offer amazing respites, as does Krabi, home to stunning limestone mountains jutting out of an azure sea, or Phuket’s beaches, restaurants and nightlife…and there are still so many more destinations to appeal to the interests of any NZ traveller!

The sheer diversity of experiences that Thailand has to offer makes her the perfect Asian destination for nearly every Kiwi traveller. And wherever you travel, be it to the bright city lights of Bangkok or to the quiet countryside surrounding a Lisu hilltribe village, you’ll discover that the Thai people are devoutly traditional, overwhelmingly friendly and the perfect hosts.

The country’s capital, Bangkok is one of the most fascinating capital cities in the world. Towering skyscrapers exist next door to traditional flower markets and temples filled with the incantations of the devout.

Thailand Travel: Bangkok – A Shopping Paradise

Bangkok is also home to some of the best shopping and spas on the planet! Be captivated by one of Asia’s most exuberant and culturally rich cities, bound to reward travellers that get beneath her steamy veneer.

Capital since 1782, Bangkok is the very epitome of modern Asia, and home to a wealth of fascinating attractions. Known as Krung Thep (City of Angels), this bustling metropolis, although modern is unmistakably Thai.

We highly recommend visiting the inspiring Grand Palace, the former residence of the much loved and highly respected Royal Family and also the resting place for the sacred Emerald Buddha.

Cruise river canals, shop at night markets and explore the greatest range of restaurants and nightlife in Asia.

Thailand travel offers a myriad of wondrous experiences for the NZ traveller from ancient ruins and temples to unspoilt beaches.

Even the hustle and bustle of Bangkok lures Kiwi travellers with its sheer energy and culture. Thailand is an easy country to travel in, with efficient transport, good accommodation, a delicious national cuisine, and people renowned for their friendliness and hospitality to strangers.

To spend time in Bangkok is to experience one of Asia’s most exciting cities, legendary traffic jams aside. Old Bangkok in the area between the river and the railway is where most of the older temples and the original palace are located.

Modern Chiang Mai to the north is very traveller-friendly and more relaxed with pleasantly cooler evenings conducive to strolling around the central Night Bazaar.

Thailand Travel: A Tropical Paradise

Thailand’s tropical islands also draw many Kiwi travellers, and Ko Samui is a prime example, covered with coconut plantations and circled by palm-fringed beaches. Dubbed the `Pearl of the South’, Phuket is Thailand’s largest island with good beaches, tropical vegetation and a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere.

Thailand’s two coastlines and numerous islands make diving and snorkelling a particularly popular activity, but trekking is northern Thailand’s biggest draw.

Chiang Mai is the main centre for treks into mountainous areas inhabited by hill tribes. Cyclists favour the flat terrain and lush river scenery of the Mekong River area in the north. Meditation study is a decidedly less strenuous ‘activity’ popular with many visitors, along with Thai cooking and traditional massage.

If you do want to get sweaty, gruelling tuition in Thai boxing is available.

Thailand Travel tips:

Money: Credit cards, particularly Visa and MasterCard, are accepted in quality shops, hotels and restaurants. ATMs are found in the larger cities, and many exchange booths will give a cash advance on a credit card. Bargaining is common practice in markets and tourist shops, and when catching non-metered taxis.

Tipping: not customary in Thailand, although Thais are getting used to the idea.

When to Go: The best overall time for visiting most of Thailand is between November and February when it rains least and is not too hot. The south is best March to May, and the north from mid-November to early December.

The peak tourist month is December and the least crowded months are May, June and September.
